Life after racing

Rehoming our retired runners

Our horses retiring from the track due to injury or performance are always given every opportunity for a rewarding and happy life after racing. We genuinely care about the horses we train and want to see them all find loving, forever homes. Many horses special to Lindsay Park and our team end up with a home for life here at the farm, often as companion horses. Upon retirement, our horses go through an internal process at Lindsay Park that assesses the following:

  • Horse’s injury, if any, and the time required for rest and rehabilitation before any equestrian work can be undertaken. Some injuries mean the horse won’t be suitable for some disciplines. Some medical conditions make the horse unsuitable for rehoming, eg recurring cardiac arrhythmia.

  • Temperament.

  • Equestrian ability.

  • Type (looks).

From this information, and if applicable, we build a horse profile to present to our official rehoming partners Lisa McMaster and Jade Willis. Both Lisa and Jade are Racing Victoria accredited as rehomers so have met stringent criteria to ensure their processes, methods and approach are all exemplary. New homes can be with people looking for everything including show jumpers, dressage horses, eventers, pony club, basic trail riding and companion horses.

Lindsay Park Retirees

Rehomers re-educate the horse to prepare it for a new life. We arrange transport to the facility and draft a rehoming agreement which is taken over by the future owner once they are found.

Quite often, horses find their forever home with a staff member who has formed a particular bond with them while they’ve been in work. Occasionally we will go with a private home when someone approaches us directly and meets all our criteria, but we shy away from rehoming to anyone who doesn’t have their own property as we have found the financial burden tends to lead to bad outcomes.

A condition of all rehomes is that if for any reason the horse can no longer be provided adequate care, or is no longer wanted, the horse is to return to Lindsay Park.
