Euroa - Veterinary & Spelling Assistant (movements)
Reports to: Veterinary & Spelling Manager
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm
Location: Euroa, Victoria
Purpose of the position
To ensure smooth, coordinated and safe internal horse movements, high quality of care for spellers and timely and comprehensive completion of administrative duties. The role is primarily involved in organising internal horse movements as it relates to our large spelling operation at Lindsay Park Euroa. The role is intended to work in coordination with the Veterinary & Spelling Assistant (movements) who is licenced to drive the trucks.
The role aims to ensure that all horses in our care are handled, transported and monitored to the highest possible standard to ensure they are always in the best of health and all records relating to their movements, health and spelling progress are kept up to date.
Basic veterinary care tasks such as applying foot poultices in paddocks, treating skin conditions, vaccinations and worming may be allocated as part of this role.
Responsibilities & Duties
The core responsibility of the Veterinary & Spelling Assistant is caring for horses while spelling. Spelling duties will include coordinating and carrying out movements and feeding.
Duties include:
loading and unloading horses onto trucks
safely turning horses out to paddocks
weighing horses
rugging and unrugging horses in paddocks
basic equine first aid
routine paddock treatments
administration of treatments including topical, oral, IM and IV treatments
updating records on movements, weights and treatments on a daily basis
assisting with vet work when required - trotting up, x-raying and handling horses in the crush
other tasks based on the skill level of the Veterinary & Spelling Assistant
Lindsay Park Racing is home to horses at all stages of life - racehorses, retirees and unbroken yearlings. The candidate should have adequate experience in the safe handling of both highly educated and unbroken horses.
Qualificaton, Experience & Skills
Knowledge and experience of feeding, handling and preparation of racehorses at level 2 (Certificate III) as a minimum standard (or working towards), or equivalent experience
Oral and written communication skills of a level to take instruction; provide information and advice to others and prepare basic reports
Commitment to continuous improvement including willingness to accept constructive feedback
Ability to work in a team and independently
Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
Sound knowledge of health and safety obligations and demonstrated skills in safe operation of equipment relevant to the training and preparation of racehorses
Minimum of two years relevant work experience
