Fun Spice continues the roll for Real Jester

Real Jester has enjoyed a good start to the season, particularly in Western Australia. On the back of Lead Rope, who made it 3 wins from 4 starts last week, Fun Spice (Real Jester ex Spice by Old Spice) remains unbeaten in 3 starts after winning at Ascot over 1500m last Saturday. The 3yo gelding is progressing through the grades quickly and looks to be a horse with a future.

Real Jester covered an average of 31 mares per season in his time at Rangeview Stud in Western Australia. He has 4 stakes performers to his credit and a winners to runners ratio over 50%. In less than 12 months he will have his first crop of more than 70 Lindsay Park bred 2yo’s hitting the track.

Real Jester has proven that he can upgrade his broodmares. From small books of modest mares in WA, his statistics are quite encouraging. Just in the past month he has had 13 runners for 7 individual winners of 11 races.

Real Jester attracted a good quality book in his first season at Lindsay Park in 2006 and we are really looking forward to getting them through the sales ring and on to the track next year.

Another winner for Real Jester

Trainer John Bowtell looks like he has a smart 3 year-old on his hands going on the recent form of his filly Lead Rope (Real Jester - Gay Abandon by Jugah).

Racing at Ascot yesterday over 1200m, Lead Rope, who started a short priced favourite ($2.20), was again too good for her rivals, winning comfortably by a length. She has now won both her starts this time in, bringing her career tally to 3 wins from 4 starts.

Real Jester has had 12 runners this season for 5 winners of 8 races. His first Lindsay Park Stud crop are now yearlings.

Lead Rope wins for Real Jester

Promising 3yo filly Lead Rope returned from a spell to record a win in very slick time at Ascot last Wednesday.

The daughter of Real Jester and Jugah mare Gay Abandon, Lead Rope broke the 1:10 barrier for 1200m, recording 1:9:59. To put this into perspective, star galloper Marasco has raced over this track and distance 6 times, and has only broke 1:10 once (1:9:71). This included a G2 and Listed win on good tracks.

Lead Rope now has 2 wins from 3 sarts. Her only unplaced run was in the WA Sires earlier this year. She looks to be a filly with a bright future and we wish her trainer John Bowtell and owners, the Haddleton family, all the very best of luck with her.

First Face Value runners impress

With the first 2yo races of the season now underway, first season sire Face Value's runners are showing good signs.

Face The Ace (Face Value ex Uniforms by Strategic) went close to giving her sire his first win. The 2yo filly trained by David Hayes was an unlucky 4th on debut in the Fulham Park Plate, before narrowly being beaten at Morphettville last Saturday.

Stabelmate Flying Face (Face Value - Fly Me Home by Flying Spur) was on debut in the same race on Saturday, finishing a nice fourth after racing greenly. She is expected to improve a lot from the run and will be racing again at Murray Bridge on Oaks Day.

Face The Ace will be transferred to David Hayes' Flemington stables and will run there on Melbourne Cup Day.

Another winner for Good Journey

Lightly raced Economy (Good Journey ex Country Class by Woodborough) appreciated the step up in distance at Moe on Monday to run away with an easy 4 length victory.

Having only her third start, the 3 year-old filly trained by Mick Price could not have been more impressive in breaking her maiden over 1628 metres.

Her victory was ran in significantly quicker time than the other 2 higher classed races over that distance on the day, indicating that there are plenty more wins in store for her.

Good Journey parade

Lindsay Park Stud’s Good Journey has attracted overwhelming attention from breeders this season and looks like covering a high quality book of mares. He has more than 150 bookings in 2008, which would see him break Barely a Moment’s South Australian record of 148 set last season.

Mares visiting Good Journey this season include Royal Purler (G1 winner), Umber (G3 winner), Grand Strategy (1/2 sister to G1 winner Grand Journey), Marsiliana (3/4 sister to Caulfielld Cup winner Arctic Scent), Elusive Doll (1/2 sister to G1 winner Hard To Get), Violet Haze (full sister to G1 winner Notoire) as well as daughters of Group One winners Ambala and Kissing Cousin.

Good Journey was paraded last Sunday September 7th to a group of local SA breeders who braved the wet conditions for a first look at one of the country’s most promising sires. Some photos from the day are included below.

Miles Above wins impressively

Good Journey 3 year-old Miles Above continues to go from strength to strength winning today at Sandown over 1500m.

At his first start in the city, Miles Above (Good Journey ex Grand Prospect by Flying Spur) stumbled out of the barriers to settle last before rounding in his opposition to win running away by just over a length.

The Dennis Daffy trained galloper now has 2 wins from 3 starts and judging by his win today, he still has plenty of improvement left, after racing greenly for most of the trip.

A full brother to Group 1 winner Grand Journey, Miles Above looks set for a bright future.

Journey reaches his destination

Good Journey has arrived safely at Lindsay Park Stud in readiness for the covering season.

Thus far bookings have been very strong, with just over 150 mares expected to visit him this season. This would see Barely a Moment's South Australian record of 148 in 2007 surpassed.

One of Good Journey's most promising gallopers, Sound Journey, will run favourite tomorrow at Caulfield in the Rokk Ebony Handicap (1400m) on his way through to races such as the G1 Dubai Racing Club Cup and  G1 Toorak Handicap.

Miles Above his opposition

Today's 3YO Maide Plate at Bendigo was a winning one for the Denis Daffy trained Miles Above (Good Journey ex Grand Prospect by Flying Spur).

A full brother to Good Journey's Group One winning filly Grand Journey, Miles Above got through the heavy conditions well to finish all over the top of his rivals to score by a long neck. He defeated a smart field of maidens including Quatro, a Rock Of Gibraltar filly out of triple Group One winner My Brilliant Star.

Good Journey's first crop progeny finished the 2007-08 racing season with 16 runners (from only 23 live foals) for 11 winners of 20 races including Group One winning filling Grand Journey and Group Two winning colt Sound Journey. The latter is being set the the Group One mile races over the spring carnival in Melbourne.

Hissing Sid on trial for bigger things

Hissing Sid looks like a horse of the future in the staying ranks after making it 3 wins from 7 starts when impressively winning last Saturday's Slickpix Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Warrnambool trainer Bill Wilde, who prepares Hissing Sid, was enthused by the three-year-old gelding's performance and is looking forward to targeting him towards some bigger races next season "He won like a good stayer... (he is) just getting better and better" Wilde explained.

The son of Golden Snake was prepared and sold by Lindsay Park Stud at the 2006 Melbourne Premier Sale for $25,000.

Hissing Sid's dam Domitrix who only started twice is a grand daughter of Deck The Halls. Her sire At Talaq has been having a great run of late with the likes of Murtajill, Autumn Jeuney and Bel Mer all representing him well this seaosn as well as the likes of past G1 winners Mummify, Rewaaya and Above Deck.

Hissing Sid is now likely to be spelled and return in the latter part of the spring.

First foal at Lindsay Park Stud

Lindsay Park Stud received a pleasant surprise this morning when our first foal of the season was born at 1am.

Black Maiden (Blackfriars - Princess Aume) has foaled down a healthy filly by Real Jester. Both mother and daughter are doing well.

Black Maiden is owned by WA based businessman Peter Walsh who also races Amelia's Reason (Rory's Jester - Tycoon Miss), the winner of this year's Perth Magic Millions 2yo race. Amelia's Reason was bred and sold by Lindsay Park Stud for $100,000 at the 2007 Perth Magic Millions Sale.

Re-Structuring of Lindsay Park Stud

Over the last three years there has been a great deal of change at Lindsay Park Stud.

Under the guidance of David Hayes we have been able to expand our stallion roster, enhance our stud facilities and develop a team of dedicated staff.

We now approach the next three years with a solid foundation and a plan that we will see the stud capitalising on more opportunity.

As part of this plan David has kindly offered that I increase my stake holding in the stud business. As of July 2, I have purchased a majority share in Lindsay Park Stud.

David Hayes will retain 100% of David Hayes Holdings which includes the Racing Stable and the Angaston property upon which the Stud operates. Whilst remaining one of the Lindsay Park Studs biggest clients and a key investor in stallions David has relinquished his shareholding in the stud so as to focus even more of his attention on training winners.

As part of this progression we will be establishing a new Lindsay Park Stud Board with the first appointment being Mr Darren Thomas. Darren is the Managing Director of one of Australia’s fastest growing family owned businesses, T&R Pastoral, based at Murray Bridge in South Australia. Darren will also be taking an equity holding in Lindsay Park Stud.

I would like to formally welcome Darren as a partner in the Stud business and thank the past Board Members for their significant contribution to the growth of Lindsay Park Stud over the last three years.

Lindsay Park Stud is on the verge of another very exciting period of growth, thanks entirely to the loyal support of our clients and the passion of our team.

The Lee Freedman trained gelding, having his fifth start, revelled  on the slow track running 1000m in the time of 58.08, more than 1.2 seconds quicker than both of the previous fillies divisions.

Ocean Journey, a $130,000 purchase by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds at the 2007 Melbourne Premier Sale, is Good Journey's 4th 2 year-old winner from 11 two-year-old runners.

Another winner for Good Journey

Thursday's meeting at Wyong may have unearthed another smart galloper for Good Journey. Lajourn (Good Journey ex Lady Cay by Marscay) scored her maiden over 1350m by a comfortable length.

After racing greenly in the early stages, Lajourn was able to gain clear running in the straight and race away from well related fillies She's Red Hot and Visuals.

From his first crop of 23 live foals, Good Journey has now had 15 runners for 11 winners including Group One winnner Grand Journey and Group Two winner Sound Journey.

De Beers Syndicate makes its first purchases

The recent Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale saw the first purchases of the recently formed De Beers Syndicate.

De Beers, a Group One winner from the Eight Carat family will commence stud duties this season at Lindsay Park and his owners have been busy seeking suitable mares to support him with.

Some of the quality lots purchased by Bloodstock Agent Mark Pilkington on behalf of the De Beers Syndicate included Boardwalk Bell, a half sister to Champion 9-time Group One winner Northerly along with stakes winners North Boy and Northern Song. Holbrook Lass, the dam of G1 Caulfield Guineas winner, In Top Swing. Newenham, a half sister to G1 Caulfield Cup runner-up Douro Valley, and the stakes placed Hip Hop, the dam of smart sprinter Tramuntana, who placed in the G1 Oakleigh Plate.

Lindsay Park Stud Managing Director Sam Hayes is extremely pleased with the support De Beers has received since his announcement to stud. "These mares will give De Beers the start a Group One winner from the Eight Carat family deserves and it is reflective of the faith Peter Devitt, Les Gordon and David Hayes have in the horse."

De Beers was a two-year-old winner who dead-heated with Stratum in the G2 Roman Consul over 1200m. He ran Racing To Win within a neck in the G2 Hobartville over 1400m and defeated the likes of Primus and Darci Brahma in his G1 Rosehill Guineas victory.

De Beers will be standing at Lindsay Park Stud for $6,600 inc. GST.

Good Times Ahead for Lindsay Park and Magali Farms

Lindsay Park Stud and Magali Farms have entered a partnership that will see proven young sire Good Journey (Nureyev – Chimes of Freedom) shuttle between South Australia and the USA.

The Group One winning son of Nureyev will re-commence his Southern Hemisphere duties at Lindsay Park Stud in the upcoming 2008 stud season after having stood privately for four seasons at Ealing Park before being purchased by Magali Farms in California.

With his oldest progeny now 3YO’s Good Journey’s has produced 10 winners from only 13 runners in his first crop of 23 live foals. Included in his first crop are Group One winner Grand Journey (ex Grand Prospect) and Group Two winner Sound Journey (ex Written By Sound).

Sound Journey won the G2 Alistair Clark Stakes (1600m) after having won his first three starts and running fourth in the G3 VRC CS Hayes Stakes. He subsequently ran fourth in the Group One VRC Guineas. Grand Journey is currently third favorite for the AJC Oaks after having collected the G2 WA Oaks and G1 WA Derby double.

Bred along the same lines as Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice (they share Best In Show as their fourth dam) Good Journey hails from one of the most celebrated families in the international stud book. He is by champion sire of sires Nureyev out of multiple Gr. One winner Chimes of Freedom (by Private Account).

His second dam Aviance is also a Gr. One winner and dam of four time Gr. One winner Denon as well as the dam of Spinning World. Good Journey’s half brother is Champion USA Sprinter, triple Gr. One winner and sire Aldebaran (by Mr Prospector).

As a racehorse Good Journey was as classy as he was consistent being placed 15 times in 16 starts (7 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds). His wins included the Gr. One Woodbine Mile along with three other wins at Group Two level. He ran third behind Domedriver and Rock of Gibraltar in the Group One Breeders Cup Mile and was placed at Group level over a mile on another two occasions. He competed exclusively on turf.

After having been purchased by Magali Farms in 2006 Good Journey covered 80 mares in California in 2007 and is in the process of covering another 75 mares this season.

In the deal brokered by Adelaide Bloodstock Agent Adrian Hancock, Lindsay Park Stud has purchased 50% of Good Journey with Magali Farms and partners retaining 50%.

“Our partnership will see Good Journey shuttle between our farms for as long as he is fit and fertile and we look forward to providing him with every opportunity to build upon this most impressive start to his stud career,” explained Magali Farms Proprietor Richard Sulpizio.

Lindsay Park Stud boss Sam Hayes was delighted to have secured Good Journey in partnership with the team at Magali Farms.

“In developing a roster of commercial stallions we could not have hoped for a better credentialed addition than Good Journey and to be doing so in partnership with Magali Farms is an added bonus.

“I would encourage breeders to take a look at his pedigree and race record and seriously consider the potential of a stallion that has produced a Group One winner and a Group Two winner from only 13 runners in his first crop,” Sam Hayes explained.

Good Journey will stand for $18,000 inc. GST at Lindsay Park Stud in 2008.

March 27th 2008
Lindsay Park Stud has today announced the addition of Group One winner De Beers (Quest For Fame – Chimeara by Danehill) to their growing stallion roster.

De Beers, a $750,000 yearling, showed his potential as a two-year-old under the guidance of John Hawkes when impressively winning at his second start on Doncaster Day at Randwick over 1200m.

Resuming as a three-year-old, De Beers was asked to validate his price tag when thrown in the deep. He wouldn’t disappoint either, dead-heating for second with Golden Slipper winner Stratum in the Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m). He would then return in the autumn for new trainer David Hayes, after a deal was struck to purchase the promising colt.

At his first start for Hayes, De Beers finished a closing second (beaten a neck) to four-time Group 1 winner Racing To Win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill over 1400m. Racing To Win would then go on that preparation to claim the George Ryder – Doncaster double and be crowned the champion three-year-old of the 2005/06 season.

Being a more precocious type than many of his well known relatives, there was always a query on whether De Beers would be able to handle the step up in distance to the 2000m of the Rosehill Guineas. These fears were soon put to rest as he raced clear of his rivals to claim his Group One victory. A fortnight later he was runner-up behind Headturner in the AJC Derby (2400m) in what was a gallant effort considering he was used up early in the race from a wide barrier.

De Beers returned at four where he failed to run up to his ability, which was attributed to a number of minor setbacks and he was duly retired from racing.

De Beers is by Quest For Fame, the English Derby winner and sire of 40 stakes winners including Viscount and the ill-fated Group One winner Unworldly, who like De Beers was also out of a Danehill mare.

His female line is one of the most well known and celebrated in the studbook. His dam Chimeara is a stakes placed daughter by Danehill from the wonderful mare Tristalove, a multiple Group 1 winner of 11 races including the AJC Sires Produce and Australasian Oaks. Tristalove, who hails from the dominant Eight Carat family, is the dam of 4 stakes winners including Chimeara’s full brothers Viking Ruler and Kempinsky.

Lindsay Park Stud’s Managing Director Sam Hayes is delighted to have secured a horse of De Beers’ quality for stud duties.

"David Hayes’ upbeat opinion of De Beers as a racehorse and stallion prospect made him a natural addition to our roster.

We’ve managed to secure De Beers at a level that allows us to stand him at such a competitive fee.

It is tempting to get carried away with stallion prices in the current market but the ultimate burden falls on breeders whom have to pay inflated service fees.

Our model revolves around buying well, not selling well,” Sam explains.

De Beers will stand his first season for $6,600 inc. GST. Alongside him at Lindsay Park Stud in 2008 will be Barely a Moment, Face Value, Real Jester and Alannan.

Face Value’s first crop of yearlings provided some of the highlights of this weeks Adelaide Magic Millions Sale.

The 2003 Caulfield Guineas runner-up had 16 lots catalogued in sessions 1 & 2 of the sale. He averaged $38,333 with a median price of $30,000, comparing favourably to the sale average of $26,290.

The top price lot for Day 2 was a filly out of Extravagantly, a grand-daughter of the triple Group 1 winner Special. Consigned by Lindsay Park Stud (as agent) she was knocked down to South Australian based breeder Darren Thomas for $120,000.

Following on from the successful pin-hook of the Face Value – More Than Fair colt at this year’s Karaka sales (purchased as a weanling at the Great Southern Sale for $26,000 and sold on for $75,000) was the sale of lot 215, a colt by Face Value out of the city winning Jeune mare, Jeune’s Heart. Originally a $20,000 purchase from Lindsay Park Stud’s 2007 Great Southern Sale draft, he was purchased by Steve & Kerry Jostlear’s Ampulla Lodge and sold under their banner for $48,000 to Avo Damirdjian.

The son of Red Ransom also had the second top price lot in the third session, a colt from the city winning Grand Lodge mare Bites. Again, this colt was sold as a weanling for just $4,250. Offered by Kiah Glenn Stud, he was purchased by Aquanita Racing for $26,000.

Face Value, a precocious horse himself from a very fast family should be able to produce early runners if his first crop progeny are anything to go by. Trainer of the last three Blue Diamond winners David Hayes comments “From the yearlings I have seen, he is producing big, strong, athletic types who will be able to cope with early training”.

Face Value covered 108 mares at $6,600 inc. GST in 2007.

February 21st 2008

Lindsay Park’s Alannan (Conquistador Cielo – Dame Sybil) has enjoyed a good start to the New Year with six individual winners and a stakes place getter in the past six weeks, indicating that his progeny are now starting to come into their own as three-year-olds.

Little Alle (Alannan – Pep Talk) will line up in this weekend’s $150k Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) after her recent stakes placing in the Listed Strutt Stakes. The Karina O’Sullivan trained filly was sent to Tasmania on the back of an impressive Morphettville win and Sandown placing. She will be joined in the Oaks field by recent Hobart winner Alreggae (Alannan – Calypso Breeze).

The David Hayes trained Capetown Lad (Alannan – Moonlight Lady) also appreciated the step up in distance from 1200m to 1522m when he comfortably accounted for a smart field at Morphettville last month. He has since been sent to the paddock with a view to race him in the early part of the spring.

Another three-year-old from the Hayes yard showing promise is Her Alibi (Alannan-Giftenary). After being desperately unlucky on debut in town, she was taken to Strathalbyn on February 6, strolling home by 4 _ lengths in smart time.

Last year’s Adelaide Magic Millions runner-up Swirly Dream (Alannan – Jon’s Pleasure) is back in work and is a possible starter in the $100k maiden race on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast on March 24.

Alannan, who was recently awarded South Australia’s leading two-year-old sire and leading first season sire, has 10 yearlings entered in the Adelaide Magic Millions sale commencing Monday March 10.

Day 4 of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale series at Karaka saw the first ever yearling by Lindsay Park stallion Face Value (Red Ransom-Freckled Face by Polish Patriot) fall under the hammer.

Offered by Hanui Farm, the bay colt from stakes performed Military Plume mare More Than Fair, was knocked down to Octagon Racing Stables for $75,000.

The colt, by the 2003 Caulfield Guineas runner-up, was previously sold by Lindsay Park Stud as a weanling at the 2007 William Inglis Great Southern Sale for $26,000.

A larger selection from Face Value’s first crop of yearlings will be on offer in March at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale where he has 27 catalogued, including 5 from Lindsay Park Stud’s draft.

Face Value, who defeated horses such as Elvstroem, Exceed and Excel (twice) and Starcraft throughout his career, covered 108 mares in 2007. He stands for $6,600 GST Inc.

Lindsay Park Stallion Alannan off to a ‘Dream’ Start

An eager crowd of South Australians and interstate visitors made their way to Alan Scott Park last Wednesday to witness the running of the $401,000 Magic Millions 2 Year Old Classic.

Leading trainer David Hayes was well represented with 5 runners in the race and it was his heavily backed first starter Swirly Dream (Alannan – Jon’s Pleasure) who turned in an eye catching effort to finish a brave second.

Swirly Dream, a $22,000 purchase at the 2006 Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale didn’t enjoy the best of luck in a race that endured much interference. After jumping well she was caught three wide, covering extra ground throughout the race.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn was able to get her balanced in the straight and she made up a lot of ground to beat home all bar the Phillip Stokes trained Truly Beautiful.

“She is a classy filly, it was her first start today and she did not turn a hair,” Dunn said.

Swirly Dream, a half sister to Group One winner Padstow, is from the first crop of Lindsay Park based stallion Alannan. The Adelaide Magic Millions sales graduate will now be aimed at the Listed Walter Brown Stakes at Cheltenham Park on March 24.

Alannan is enjoying a great start to his stud career. Prior to Swirly Dream’s debut, Hayes had taken 2 Alannan’s to the track for victory on both occasions. The first was with Aquifer at Victoria Park back in October and then with Fitofancy who defeated a smart bunch of 2 year olds also at Victoria Park on December 15 last year.

On back of these results there has been plenty of demand for Alannan’s progeny at the recent Adelaide Magic Millions Sale with them selling up to $43,000.

Alannan will stand at Lindsay Park Stud in 2007 for a service fee of $8,250 (GST Inc.) alongside triple Group 1 winner Barely a Moment as well as Face Value, Real Jester and Fraar.
