Lindsay Park Stud remains in SA

Following news today that David Hayes has decided to sell another significant portion of his famous horse property in the Barossa Valley, Sam Hayes has confirmed that Lindsay Park Stud is remaining in South Australia.

The Stud business currently operates off approximately 650 acres which is being retained by the Hayes family. After re-establishing the stud business in 2005, Sam Hayes and business partner Darren Thomas purchased the remainder of the breeding business from David Hayes in 2008.

“The racing stable and the stud share a lot of history, as well as the Lindsay Park name; however we operate very different businesses. David trains horses and we breed them,” Sam explained.

“We respect David’s decision and we have enjoyed operating from adjoining properties however this move does not directly affect the stud or our plans.

“Being based here in SA is an integral part of what we are passionate about. We believe we can stand top quality stallions in South Australia, stallions that will attract some of the best mares from right across the country.”

“Naturally we will be following the sale process with a great deal of interest as there could be a lot of synergy established with the right buyer,” Sam explained.

There are currently seven stallions on the Lindsay Park Stud roster and they are expecting to attract over 450 mares to their Barossa Valley base in 2010.

Weekend double for Good Journey

Good Journey enjoyed another successful weekend when his only two runners both recorded impressive victories.

Miles Above enjoyed getting back to the wide open sapces at Flemington and was a dominant 3.75 length winner over the 2000 metre trip. That was his third win from five starts this preparation.

Yesterday, Mr. Griswold puled off a hat trick of wins when beating a handy field of gallopers at Cranbourne over 1500 metres. The lightly raced four year-old looks like he can shape up to a city race in the not too distant future.

Good Journey's Group Two winner Sound Journey is back in work in preparation for the spring carnival. The winner of more than $334,000 in prizemoney won two races last spring and was also runner-up at stakes level.

Face Value - proving to be real value

Yesterday’s maiden win of Where’schristopher (Face Value – Xantippe) at Balaklava brought up Face Value’s 29th winner of his career, thereby getting his winners to runners ratio up to the much desiarble 50% mark.

The Llyod Kennewell trained 3 year-old filly, who was bred and sold by Riverdene Stud, had show nice ability in her first campaign and resumed from a spell with an impressive 2.8 length victory.

Click here to watch the final 600 metres of the race http://www.trsa.com.au/race_information/race_results_and_replays (July 15, Balaklava, race 2). You can pick her up sitting outside the leader in the navy and white silks.

Face Value now sits in 8th place on the second season sires table (by winners). The only other top 10 active stallions in this list that can boast a higher winners to runners ratio are Fastnet Rock, Shamardal and Not A Single Doubt.

In recent weeks, Face Value's other winners have included Face Off (Moonee Valley), Good Value (3 wins from 4 starts) and Valace (Morphettville) to name a few.

His sire Red Ransom is enjoying much success, with the likes of Charge Forward, All American, Domesday, Onemorenomore, Red Dazzlerand Duporth now all at stud.

Face Value is proving quite versatile with his progeny showing no bias towards age, gender, distance or track conditions...he is ideally suited to the SABOIS system.

With his progeny averaging 4.5 times service fee at this year's Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale, Face Value represents great value for breeders, whether you are selling or racing.

Good Value settled off the speed and proved too good for his rivals, with a narrow, yet decisive victory. Trainer Mick Kent will now send him to Flemingtonon July 10 for the series final.

Another one for Face Value

3 year-old Face Value gelding, Face Off, made it 2 wins in a row when scoring at Moonee Valley today.

Having won his maiden last start at Bendigo over 1000 metres, Face Off stepped up quickly in distance to 1533 metres in which he proved to be more than up to the task.

The Shaun Dwyer trained trained galloper has only raced 6 times, and further improvement can be expected.

This continues the great run for Face Value, who is fast becoming a prolific source of winners.

Face Value's other runner in the race, Canny Be A Bulldog ran well to finish third.

A Royal week for Oasis Dream

The last week has delivered more great results for sire sensation Oasis Dream.

Last Monday, Lady Jane Digby won the Listed Warwickshire Oaks and once again proved the versatility of Oasis Dream to produce stakes winners over all distances. On Wednesday and Thursday at Royal Ascot it was all about speed as Oasis Dream delivered two more stakes winners. Rainfall won the Group 3 Jersey Stakes to make it two wins in three years in this race for the progeny of Oasis Dream, and on Thursday, Approve showed a strong turn of foot to put the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes beyond his opponents grasp.

Since the beginning of April, Oasis Dream has produced 13 individual stakes winners throughout Europe and the United States.

Australian breeders should look no further than the handsome and fast son of Oasis Dream - CAPTAIN GERRARD who commences his Australian breeding duties in 2010 at Lindsay Park Stud at an advertised service fee of $8,800 (GST inclusive). Captain Gerrard is busy packing his bags to Lindsay Park following his inaugural Northern Hemisphere stud season at Mickley Stud (UK) where he covered 100 plus mares and achieved a fertility rate of 98%.

Mickley Stud Principal Richard Kent stated, "It has been a brilliant start for Captain Gerrard, he has been well supported by breeders and has taken to his duties like a duck to water. Captain Gerrard provides Australian breeders with the opportunity to tap into Oasis Dream who just goes from strength to strength as a champion stallion."

Miles Above his opposition

Today's win of Miles Above at Ballarat demonstrated just what a talented horse he is.

The Good Journey 4 year-old was resuming from a spell and after travelling wide throughout, was too strong over the final stages to win the rating 0-78 event over 1400 metres running away.

Fellow Good Journey galloper Trajet was also resuming from a break in the same race and he came from last on the bend to finish a closing third.

Both horses look to be in for a good winter campaign, in particular Miles Above, who was once touted as a VRC Derby contender before suffering a setback.

Happy times for Good Journey

Scoring a stylish win at his second race start at Morphettville on Saturday was improving two year-old Happy Trails, an $11,000 purchase for his trainer Paul Beshara from the Mill Park draft at the 2009 Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Adelaide.

Third on debut at Murray Bridge on May 26 when he reared at the start and was tightened for room, the son of Lindsay Park based Good Journey (USA) took benefit from that experience, charging home from a clear last to win the 1100 metre open juvenile event by more than a length.

This was the first of a Saturday double for Good Journey, who also sired Sha Tin winner Touch Chic later that afternoon.

Happy Trails (pictured as a yearling) is the second foal of the Perugino (USA) mare Madame Flurry, a half-sister to stakes-winner Lake Villa and to the dam of Group Three winner Royal Sash.

Happy Trails will have one more run before being turned out and aimed at the spring carnival.

Face Off, Face On

The well travelled three year-old Face Off (Face Value - Garden Flower) showed great promise today at Bendigo, winning his maiden over 1000m.

Having previously raced in New Zealand, Face Off come from well off the pace to score an emphatic 2.75 length victory defeating a handy group of maidens including the odds-on favourite and runner-up, Orinoco.

Face Off was bred by Dr. Denis O'Brien, who raced Face Value himself. He was sold at the 2007 Great Southern Sale for $36,000 to bloodstock agent Paul Willetts and subsequnetly found his way across to New Zealand. He is now trained by Shaun Dwyer and looks to have a nice future ahead of him.

Face Value has enjoyed a great run of late. The below table outlines all second season stallions in Victoria and South Australia. Once again, he is in the top 10 stallions of his generation as well as having a very high average earnings per runner figure.

Journey Conquers Sandown

Today's win of Conquering Journey at Sandown continues a great run of late for his sire, Good Journey.

The lightly raced three year-old colt worked hard early and held off all late challenges to score a narrow, but impressive victory over 1200 metres. That was his second win from three starts and there looks to be plenty in store for the Peter Moody trained galloper.

Good Journey continues to make the most of his opportunities. The Group One winning son of Nureyev's first Lindsay Park bred crop are now weanlings. A selection of these were recently offered at the Inglis Great Southern Sale in which he was the fifth highest averaging sire behind the likes of Commands, Stratum, Danzero and Wilander's 3/4 brother, Magnus.

The below table compares him favourably to other young stallions on the rise; Dane Shadow and Charge Forward.

More Stakes Winners for Oasis Dream

The Oasis Dream juggernaut continued over the past week with stakes winners in Germany, Great Britain and the United States.

On Saturday at Hollywood Park, Irish bred Tuscan Evening saluted the judge in the Group One Gamely Stakes, thus providing Oasis Dream with his sixth individual Group One winner.

On the same day in Great Britain, Main Aim won the Group Three John of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock and Field of Dreams was successful at Newmarket in the Listed King Charles II Stakes.

Five days earlier in Cologne, Frozen Power won the Group Two Mehl Mulhens Rennen, the equivalent of the German 2000 Guineas.

Oasis Dream's progeny have won ten stakes races during the months of April and May, including two Group One's, in what can only be described as an amazing run for the multiple Group One winning champion racehorse and sire sensation.

Australian breeders should look no further than the handsome and fast son of Oasis Dream - CAPTAIN GERRARD.

Captain Gerrard commences his Australian breeding duties in 2010 at Lindsay Park Stud at an advertised service fee of $8,800 (GST inclusive).

The Results Keep Coming

The last 14 days have continued to provide more reasons as to why breeders should be considering CAPTAIN GERRARD, standing at Lindsay Park for the 2010 breeding season at a service fee of $8,800 (GST inclusive).

Captain Gerrard’s sire OASIS DREAM delivered his fifth individual Group One winner last weekend when Querari won the Premio Presidente della Repubblica in Italy. A week earlier, his filly Sandbar won the Group Three Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud in France, thus making it six stakes winners in a little over a month for the UK based sire sensation.

INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, who is bred along similar lines to Captain Gerrard, has now sired 34 individual stakes winners, following recent wins by Allied Powers in the Group Three Prix D’Hedouville at Longchamp in France and Charming Woman in the Group Three Premio Tudini in Italy. His success in Europe continues as he builds his reputation as a champion stallion.

Closer to home, Invincible Spirit’s son, Slamming, won at Flemington on Saturday. Slamming is from Invincible Spirit’s last Australian crop (2006 breeding season), as is recent Group One AJC Sires Produce winner Yosei, where he was in considerable demand from Australian breeders covering in excess of 150 mares.

Loads of Joy for Francis Lui

Loads of Joy (Face Value – More Than Fair) made it three wins from six starts in Hong Kong last night. The first crop son of Face Value has now won over AUD 220,000 or HK $1,280,000.

It was a dominant front running performance with the final margin being 3.3 lengths. He is now unbeaten over 1200m on the synthetic track.

Loads of Joy was purchased as a weanling by New Zealand Bloodstock from the Inglis Great Southern Sale draft of Lindsay Park Stud for $26,000. He went on to make $75,000 in the NZB Select Sale before being traded to Hong Kong through well respected agent Anton Koolman.

Captain Gerrard (IRE) to stand at Lindsay Park Stud

Captain Gerrard (Oasis Dream (GB) – Delphinus (GB) by Soviet Star (USA)), the precocious multiple stakes winning son of sire sensation Oasis Dream will commence his Australian stud duties this season at Lindsay Park Stud at a fee of $8,800 (GST inclusive).

The handsome son of Oasis Dream possessed blistering speed to win multiple Group races as a two and three years old on Britain’s leading racecourses at Newmarket and Ascot.

Captain Gerrard’s victory as a three year-old against the older horses in the Group Three Palace House Stakes at Newmarket encapsulated his class and ability; showing great speed and acceleration to an all-the-way victory, defeating July Cup winner and Champion 3 year-old Sprinter of Great Britain, Sahkee’s Secret (GB).

His sire line has been incredibly successful through the deeds of Green Desert (USA) and Danzig (USA).  His sire, Oasis Dream, from three crops to race has produced 28 stakes winners (four at Group One level) from 278 starters, thus achieving a stakes winners to runners ratio of over 10% which in Australia is comparable only to Redoute’s Choice (11.2%).

It is relevant to note that Captain Gerrard is bred on similar lines to Invincible Spirit (IRE) with the latter being by Green Desert from a Kris (GB) mare and the former being by a son of Green Desert from a mare whose maternal grand sire is Kris.

Lindsay Park Stud Managing Director Sam Hayes stated, “We are extremely pleased to be standing a well performed son of Oasis Dream, who is considered by many as the next big thing in the Northern Hemisphere. Rodney Rae, Thoroughbred Racing Bureau principal, sourced and purchased Captain Gerrard from the UK in the belief that he is an ideal horse suited to Australian conditions. We are excited to be involved with Rodney in this venture and hopefully this marks the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the two companies.”

Thoroughbred Racing Bureau Managing Director Rodney Rae stated, “We are ecstatic about being given the opportunity to stand Captain Gerrard at Lindsay Park Stud.  Captain Gerrard is a strong bodied, well conformed stallion, possessing good bone and an abundance of speed.  His sire line is arguably the most successful in the history of modern day racing and his dam, grand dam and great grand dam boast a family that has produced 5 Group One winners, an additional 24 stakes winners and 11 stakes performers.  We believe that Captain Gerrard possesses the critical ingredients for a successful stallion - speed, performance, type and pedigree.”

Captain Gerrard commenced his Northern Hemisphere stud duties in 2010 at UK based Mickley Stud and will continue to shuttle to and from Lindsay Park Stud.

Lindsay Park Stud stallions sire trifecta!

Yesterday's 2 year-old event at Morphettville Parks saw Lindsay Park Stud based stallions sire the trifecta with three debutants, each by different stallions, filling the placings.

Monegasque (Face Value - Jeune Royale by Jeune) raced on the pace and showed a bit too much speed for his rivals over the 1000 metre trip to win by a length. Twilight Dancer (Real Jester - Cross Me Not by Bellotto) ran well to finish second, whilst Little Fireball (Barely a Moment - Tsukiji by Fuji Kiseki) finsihed an eye-catching third after being held up in the early part of the straight.

What makes this feat even more interesting is that in this 14 horse field, Lindsay Park Stud bred runners also filled fourth and fifth positions with Zip In Time and Designer, both being by first season sire Barely a Moment.

Face Value 2 year-olds impressing

Face Value has sired two promising 2 year-old winners in the past week that look like going on to bigger and better things.

Dream Face (ex Fly Me Home) showed good speed to her maiden at Bendigo over 1000 metres last Saturday. She had previously been placed the very smart Sheila's Star.

Yesterday the debutant Monegasque (ex Jeune Royale) was impressive in winning over 1000 metres at Morphettville Park. Monegasque raced on the pace and was always in control to go on and score comfortably by a length.

Both 2 year-olds are prepared by David Hayes.

Stakes performer for Barely a Moment

Those watching yesterday's Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) at Flemington would have sworn that at the 100 metre mark Barely a Moment was going to be graced with his first stakes winner in the shape of Life Is A Cabernet (ex Cabernet Queen).

The David Hayes prepared filly had raced outside the leader for most of the race and hit the front at the 150 metre mark, appearing to draw clear. However, her 'greeness' saw her wobble around in the shadows of the post to be edged out by the promising Epic Dragon by the offical margin of a nose.

Barely a Moment's runners are stating to come to the fore no in the latter half of the season. He has now had 19 runners for 3 winners and 5 further placegetters.

Expect to see the talented 'Seeyasoon' (ex Josalie) debut for the Hayes stable in the coming weeks.

Lindsay Park Stud announces new stallion and 2010 service fees

Lindsay Park Stud is proud to announce that Group Two winner Wilander (Exceed And Excel – Scandinavia by Snippets) will be commencing stud duties in 2010 at its historic Barossa Valley base.

A $625,000 Easter Yearling graduate, Wilander was purchased by John Ferguson and under the guidance of trainer Lee Freedman he won his first two starts as a juvenile. An eight length debut win at Ballarat (1100m) was then followed up with a two and a half length victory in the Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) defeating the likes of Golden Slipper runner-up Von Costa De Hero and fellow Exceed And Excel colt Exceedingly Good.

At three, Wilander trained on to claim the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Weight For Age level defeating older horses such as Lucky Secret and Kaphero. This victory cemented his ranking as one of the leading three year-old sprinters in Australia.

A further victory in the Listed Bob Hoysted and a close up fourth in the Group One Lightning Stakes gave Wilander a three year-old timeform rating of 122, equal with Northern Meteor (2009 fee $33,000) and champion filly Samantha Miss. He retired with a race record of 10 starts 4-1-0 with prize money earnings of $342,850.

Wilander’s pedigree is constantly growing in stature. His sire is one of Danehill’s most brilliant sons Exceed And Excel; already the producer of twenty-two stakes winners. His dam Scandinavia was a highly talented Group Two winner and four times placed at Group One level. She has also produced Wilander’s three quarter brother and Group One winner Magnus along with Helsinge, dam of the exceptional filly Black Caviar.

The Danehill/Snippets cross that Wilander possesses is that also of high class two and three year-old Snitzel, now a successful young sire. His second dam Song Of Norway (by Vain) produced four stakes winners and rounds out what is a gifted, tough and precocious colonial family.

Lindsay Park Stud’s Managing Director Sam Hayes is buoyant about their new acquisition. He explains “Wilander was a $625,000 yearling, a Group winning two-year-old and three-year-old with an outstanding pedigree. That is a recipe that works.”

Hayes believes that Wilander will fill a niche in Lindsay Park Stud’s lineup. “We have been looking for a speed influenced Danehill line stallion to compliment our roster and Wilander fits the bill perfectly” he says.

Wilander will stand his first season at the introductory fee of $8,800 inc. GST. Please note that shares are now available. For more details contact Sam Hayes on 0438 767 227.

Life Is A Cabernet for Barely a Moment

Two-year-old Life Is A Cabernet earned a shot at black-type races when she broke through for her first metropolitan win in the Bint Marscay Handicap at Sandown.

Two-year-old Life Is A Cabernet earned a shot at black-type races when she broke through for her first metropolitan win in the Bint Marscay Handicap at Sandown.

The David Hayes-prepared filly, bred by Lindsay Park Stud, was a $23,000 purchase at the 2009 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale and has already won two races from three starts for the leading trainer and his partners.

The filly is a daughter of three-time Group One winner Barely A Moment who gave Hayes his first victories at the highest level after he returned from 10 years in Hong Kong by winning the 2005 Dubai Racing Club Cup (1400m) and the Toorak Hcp (1600m) at Caulfield.

Hayes' stable manager Tom Dabernig said Barely A Moment, who as a two-year-old won the 2004 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, would make a name for himself as a stallion.

"We've got quite a few of them and I think the majority of them will progress to be city-class horses," he said.

Dabernig said if Life Is A Cabernet pulled up well, she would step up in grade to the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Sunday week.

The Listed Gibson Carmichael Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on May 15 is also under consideration.

Nervola Belle produces a progeny double for Lindsay Park Stud and Kambula Stud

Barely a Moment and Face Value were both represented with winners over the space of 5 days, both out of Kambula Stud's mare Nervola Belle.

Last Friday 2 year-old filly Moment by Moment notched up Barely a Moment's 3rd winner when saluting at Eagle Farm over 1200m. This was followed up on Wednesday when Face Value 3 year-old filly Valuabelle scored a runaway 4 length win at Strathalbyn over the same distance.

David Toole's Kambula Stud is a shareholder in both stallions, and he believes that there is plenty to look forward to. "Face Value is making a good impression to a lot of people and justifyably so" says Toole. "His runners to winners percentage is fantastic and his yearlings continue to sell well including one of mine that made 8 times service fee at the recent Adelaide Sales".

Meanwhile, first season sire Barely a Moment is showing some very positive signs with several of his 2 year-old runners showing good ability. Toole explains "I have bred and sold some very nice Barely a Moment's including a colt from my stakes winning mare Josalie that is in work with David Hayes. The reports on him have been very encouraging and like many of the breed, I can't wait to see him as a late 2 year-old and onwards."

The conections of Valuabelle plan to race her in Melbourne next start whilst Moment By Moment is likely to find another race in Brisbane.

Barely a Moment quinella

Former star galloper Barely a Moment has continued his bright start at stud with a second impressive first crop winner.

Promising two-year-old Life is a Cabernet, a $23,000 purchase from last year's Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, led home a quinella result for her sire when successful at Balaklava on Sunday.

In beating the rest of the juvenile field by four and a half lengths, Life is a Cabernet and runner-up Fleet Riane impressed top trainer David Hayes.

Hayes will see how the winner pulls up but is looking at running the filly in the upcoming $200,000 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic (1200m) on March 8.

The upcoming 2010 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale will present a strong line up of yearlings by Barely a Moment to go under the hammer this year.

The Lindsay Park Stud based Barely a Moment has 36 yearlings catalogued including a half brother to top Sydney galloper Voice Commander and a half sister to Guineas winner Reigning Belle.

The two day sale is on March 9 and 10.

Rambuka gives Real Jester his first 2 year-old winner for the season

The David Hayes trained Rambuka (Real Jester - Spirit Of Tudor by Snippets) provided Real Jester with his first 2 year-old winner of the 2009/10 season at Morphettville on Saturday.

Rambuka ($5) sat just behind the leaders before angling out at the top of the straight and running away to win by 3/4 of a length from Lilgiggleo ($41) with another 3 1/2 lengths away to Miss Explosive ($5) third.

Real Jester is the sire of 30 winners from 63 runners inlcuding 4 stakes performers.

Positive signs ahead for Face Value

The below table illustrates the performance of the top 8 second season sires in Australia by number of winners. Face Value has already sired 11 winners from 28 runners this season with a winners to runners ratio of 37% second only to leading sire Fastnet Rock.

The other factor to take note of is that Face Value has achieved these figures with a first crop of 68 live foals, significantly less than many of his counterparts.

Face Value’s top performer Silent Surround has shown she is well up the top grade against her own age and sex as evidenced with several fantastic runs this spring including a second place behind VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m). Silent Surround will be one to watch in the major 3yo fillies races this Autumn.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the Face Value progeny is their versatility. He has proven he can throw a speedy 2 year-old, a classic 3 year-old and everything in between.

Weekend treble for Good Journey

Good Journey has enjoyed a successful weekend, siring 3 winners.

The Mark Kavanagh trained Sound Journey backed up his last start win with another impressive victory over 1500 metres at Sandown, drawing clear to win by 2.25 lengths carrying the topweight of 58.5kg. Sound Journey looks to have recaptured some of his best form that saw him previously win at Group 2 level.

Yesterday's racing at Carnbourne saw promising 4 year-old gelding Trajet score a comfortable 3.3 length win in a 0-68 handicap over 2025m. The lightly raced galloper looks to have a nice future ahead of him for trainer Nikki Burke.

Meanwhile, Blesswithtalent won his 3rd race in Malaysia for trainer B.T.Lim over 1400m. Blesswithtalent is from the first crop of Good Journey and was a $3,000 Inglis Autumn yearling sale purchase.

Good Journey now boasts 11 winners from 26 runners for the 2009/10 season to date.

The Journey continues for Lindsay Park Stud

Sound Journey’s win in the Emirates Airline Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday capped off a winning run of late for both his sire Good Journey and Lindsay Park Stud.

The winner of the 2008 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes recaptured some of his best form when coming from near the tail of the field to claim the final race of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. His time of 1.22.18 was the slickest of all 1400m races during the carnival.

Sound Journey’s sire, Good Journey, has unearthed a couple more emerging sprinters recently with the Darren Weir trained Via Real and Robert Heathcote’s Ocean Journey both having won over 1000m by 3 lengths and 5 lengths respectively.

Good Journey has already had 8 winners this season from limited runners and his statistics continue to impress; perhaps the most compelling being that from his first crop of just 23 live foals he’s produced 12 winners including Group 1 winner Grand Journey and Group 2 winner Sound Journey.

With a world class set of credentials next to his name, Good Journey is one of the most exciting up-and-coming stallion prospects in the country. His first Lindsay Park Stud bred progeny are now on the ground (pictures attached).

Lindsay Park Stud’s stallion roster is now coming of age with the likes of Barely a Moment, Face Value and Real Jester all having an impact on a national scale.

Barely a Moment has made a promising start to his stud career and currently sits 3rd on the first season sires list with 1 winner and 2 further placegetters from 4 runners, whilst Silent Surround continues to fly the flag for her sire Face Value when runner-up behind star filly Paint Perfume in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes.

Real Jester, whose first Lindsay Park Stud bred progeny have just turned 2, added another city winner to his name when Tudor Spirit saluted at Morphettville on Saturday.

Barely a Moment off to a great start

Young stallion, Barely a Moment (Gilded Time ex Lady Danna by Danehill) has got his new career as a sire off to a grand start. His promising daughter Whipthebrewer scored a solid victory in Adelaide on Saturday in the CBUS Plate (1000m) at Morphettville Parks. Whipthebrewer lived up to her trainers, David Hayes, expectation when she cruised home two-and-a-half lengths clear of her rivals.

“She’s got good ability and I have a bit of an opinion of her,” Hayes said. “I used this race as a virtual trial for her and she’ll run next in either the Merson Cooper or the Maribyrnong Plate.” The win was a timely boost for her full brother who is set to go under the hammer at the 2010 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale in March. They are both from the twice winning Lake Coniston mare Constant in Opal a half-sister to Flamboyant, the dam of two stakes performers including Blue Diamond Prelude winner and Group One placed youngster Hammerbeam.

Barely a Moment was bred by WA horseman Dick Vincent, who sold him for $58,000 to Mark Pilkington at the 2003 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale at Belmont. Barely a Moment’s progeny will also visit the Magic Millions sales rings with members of his latest crop heading to Perth in 2010 where seven yearlings have been catalogued for sale in January. The stallion will also be represented in his home state, South Australia, in March and among those will be the full brother to Whipthebrewer.

“It’s great to see Barely a Moment get a winner on the board so early,” Magic Millions Adelaide and Victorian Manager Tim Brown said. “I’ve seen a number of quality individuals by him heading to our Adelaide Sale in March including Whipthebrewer’s full brother who is a cracking type.”

The colt will be offered at that auction by Lindsay Park Stud, run by Sam Hayes’ who stands Barely a Moment at a fee of $14,300 this spring.

Not So Silent

The ability and potential of 3YO Face Value filly Silent Surround was heard loud and clear after the Group Two Edward Manifold (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

The Group Three winner reeled off some of the fastest sectionals of the day to come from last to grab third in what was an eye catching lead up to the VRC Oaks. Covering her last 400m in 22.86 seconds Silent Surround may now head to the Thousand Guineas on the advice of jockey Damien Oliver.

"Damien was glowing in his assessment and suggested we go to the Thousand Guineas on the way to the VRC Oaks. We felt that she was on track after her first two starts in Melbourne this prep but it what nice to see it unfold today," said Nick Smart, son of trainer Bill Smart.

Silent Surround has stamped herself as one of the "horses to follow' this Spring and has firmed into second favourite ($8) behind Irish Lights ($7.50) in the VRC Oaks markets.

Offered by Lindsay Park Stud at the 2008 Adelaide Magic Millions sale, Silent Surround was purchased for $36,000 by Mark Minervini before making her way to Bill Smart's stables.

Out of Rory's Jester mare Biography whom is a half sister to Group Two winner and Group One placed Station Hand, Silent Surround hails from the first crop of Lindsay Park Stud stallion Face Value (Red Ransom ex Freckled Face by Polish Patriot).

Having finished in the top ten first season sires with a crop of 68 live foals, the Caulfield Guineas runner up went on to cover over 108 mares in his third season on the back of a positive response to his first crop of foals.

Standing for only $6,600 inc. GST Face Value represents great value for breeders looking for a stallion with plenty of upside over the ensuing month.

Good Journey on a roll

Good Journey's good run has continued on into the new racing season with 2 winners in Victoria this week.

The ultra impressive Locke's Choice (ex Kind by St Hilarion) blew his rivals away to win by 6 lengths over 1000m today at Sale. The 4 year-old gelding was having just his second race start and looks to be a very smart horse in the making.

This follows on from Traverse (ex Point Aven by Green Perfume) who made it back-to-back wins when scoring at Doanld on Monday. He has won his last 2 starts by a combined total of 5 lengths.

Face Value kicks off new season in style

Face Value has enjoyed a great start to the new racing season with 2 city winners in 5 days.

Valace (ex Tulipano by Centaine) continued on her winning way last Saturday at Morphettville. The Richard Jolly trained filly has now made it 2 wins from as many starts for connections R Jolly, V Svetlichny, P Hattam, I Kolega, Shadwan Syndicate, Astute Racing Brains Syndicate, Elmah Jay Jey Syndicate, P Sutch, The Golden Greeks Syndicate & Questa Volta Syndicate.

Today at Morphettville promising filly Exalted Blonde (Our Dear Lady by Southern Appeal) overcame a wide run throughout to hold off the David Hayes trained Tantomile to win narrowly over 1000m. The Jim Smith trained filly is raced by Mr. Ken & Mrs. Helen Smith who also bred her.

Face Value’s Group 3 winning filly Silent Surround (ex Biography by Rory’s Jester) came back into work looking extremely well according to trainer Bill Smart. Silent Surround is set to resume in Adelaide on August 15 before heading over to Melbourne for the feature 3 year-old fillies races this spring.

Exciting times ahead for Hussonet

Champion sire Hussonet is poised to have his best season in Australia to date in 2009/10. Whilst his star galloper Weekend Hussler will not be running this spring, there are a number of emerging gallopers who are set to take centre stage.

Fist Of Fury Eagle Falls, Huxssen and Miss Darcey are a few rising 4 year-olds who have indicated they are up to G1 level in Open class, whilst Fitoussi (G1 placed) and Bubble Below (Listed placed) are lightly raced horses who look to have a nice future.

Hussonet’s rising 3 year-olds are headed up by Husskila who is on a Guineas/Oaks campaign for trainer David Hayes. There are also a couple of promising ones set to resume soon in Sydney, being Latin News and Hus Der Lieften who were both brilliant when winning in town recently.

Hussonet (the sire of REAAN) currently sits in 2nd position on the 3rd season sires list between Choisir and Street Cry. His winners to runners ratio this season of 51% is the equal highest of any third season sire in the top 10.

In the sales ring in 2009 he was the 3rd highest performed sire at Easter by median behind Redoute’s Choice and Encosta De Lago (more than 4 lots sold). His median/fee ratio of 5.7 was the highest of any stallion in this sale in which he boasted a 100% clearance rate. At the Magic Millions Gold Coast Hussonet averaged $116k (14 sold) which was more than 3 times his 2006 fee.

Hussonet’s runners to watch in 2009/10

Rising 4 year-olds (45 individual 3yo winners in 2008/09):

Miss Darcey (Anthony Cummings): Group 3 winner of the Adrian Knox and Group 1 placed in the AJC Oaks

Fist Of Fury (John O’Shea): Group 1 runner-up in the Ascot Vale behind Northern Meteor at his 3rd start

Fitoussi (Peter Moody): Group 1 placed in the SA Derby at his 9th start

Eagle Falls (David Hayes): Unlucky 2nd in the G3 Alister Clark at his 4th start

Bubble Below (Mick Kent): Lightly raced, ran 2nd at Listed level behind unbeaten Typhoon Tracey at her 3rd start

Husskila (David Hayes): Unlucky 3rd in Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes

Moonlight Hussey (Gillian Heinrich): Dual Listed placegetter behind boom filly Paprika

Latin News (Bart Cummings): 4 length winner on debut at Canterbury

Hus Der Lieften (Gerald Ryan): $1.2 million purchase who was impressive winning at his 2nd start at Rosehill in May

Illusionary (Rodney Douglas): Sandown winner at 2nd race start

Ashaki (Mick Price): 3 length winner on debut

Girl Hussler (David Payne): Winner on debut at Canterbury

Good Journey adds another stakes performer

Lindsay Park Stud’s Good Journey added another stakes performer to his resume last Saturday when Night At The Opera (ex Written By A Queen by Masterclass) finished a close third in the Listed Belmont Classic (2200m).

The Group 1 winning son of Nureyev continues to display the ability to throw stakes horses from relatively small books and to date he has a stakes performers/winners ratio of 15% and a stakes performers/named foals ratio of 5%.

Having stood privately from 2003 through to 2006, Good Journey covered a total of just 140 mares in the four year period but has produced impressive performers despite such limited opportunity.

His first crop, now four year-olds, include Group One winner Grand Journey, who won the WA Oaks, WA Derby double last season and also the stakeswinning Sound Journey.

To date there have been 20 winners from his first three crops of racing age, and from a total number of just 93 live foals.

With the move to Lindsay Park for the 2008 season however, his opportunities have increased considerably in both quantity and quality, serving a book of 119 in his first season at the legendary South Australian farm.

For a stallion with proven ability from such limited numbers, and coming off serving his best book, following him up this season at a fee of $16,500 is a proposition that is sure to be attractive to plenty of breeders.

Lindsay Park Stud continues presence in WA Racing

Saturday’s Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) in Perth carries with it a significant presence from Lindsay Park Stud, who is represented via 4 runners.

Night At The Opera (Good Journey – Written By A Queen) will represent Lindsay Park Stud’s flagship sire, Good Journey in this event. She was an unlucky 4th last start after striking interference early in the Belmont Oaks, a race won by the David Hayes trained Journey, who will also contest the Belmont Classic.  Journey (Jeune - Hasty Jest) was bred and sold by Lindsay Park Stud at the 2007 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale for $40,000 to Tony Freebairn.

Mega Steel (Helenus – Cabernet Queen) is an emerging talent who looks very hard to beat going on his close 2nd behind Grand Nirvana in the Belmont Guineas recently. His dam Cabernet Queen is owned by Lindsay Park Stud with partners Darren Thomas and Peter Walsh.

Snow Symphony (Distant Music – The Ex Files) has been a consistent performer of late. He was another horse bred and sold by Lindsay Park Stud, making $46,000 at the 2007 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Lindsay Park Stud’s presence in Western Australia has also been evident through the progeny of its stallions, Real Jester and Face Value. Gallopers such as 3 year-olds Lead Rope and Fun Spice have continued to show what a great job Real Jester has done thus far from limited opportunities. Face Of Mercy (ex Mercifully) is Face Value’s sole runner in WA to date and will resume from a spell on Saturday after running well in the Perth Magic Millions last preparation.

This follows on from the success of 2008 Perth Magic Millions winner Amelia’s Reason (Rory’s Jester – Tycoon Miss) who was bred and sold by Lindsay Park Stud for $100,000 to Lou Luciani at the 2007 Perth sales. Amelia’s Reason is owned by the Amelia Park Club.

3rd winner for Face Value

Lindsay Park Stud first season sire Face Value (Red Ransom-Freckled Face, by Polish Patriot) recorded his 3rd winner yesterday.

2YO filly Etoile Vitesse (Face Value-French Treasure, by Miswaki) scored over 1100m at Queanbeyan yesterday at her 2nd start (after a runner-up on debut on May 29) for trainer Keith Dryden. Etoile Vitesse was a $13,000 weanling consigned from Oaklands Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions National Sale. (Jun 16)

Face Value currently sits in 9th position on the first season sire list, one position behind Elvstroem, a horse he defeated when runner-up in the 2003 Caulfield Guineas.

Shrewd back in rhythm

It was a day of firsts at Moonee Valley on Monday when a new look Shrewd Rhythm raced back into the winners circle for trainer Mick Price.

The lightly raced 4 year-old entire was having his first start for Price and looked impressive in his 1 ¼ length victory, defeating Valley specialists Allied Force and Woppitt over 1000m.

Shrewd Rhythm was sent to Price just over a month ago by his owners, headed up by Sam Hayes’ Lindsay Park Stud which owns a 52.5% share in him. Lindsay Park Stud, who races the son of Danehill Dancer with co-owners Patinack Farm, Mark Walkley and Scott Emery, purchased the colt from the Greg Eurell stable heading into his 3 year-old season.

Having previously won the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude and running third in the Group 1 Blue Diamond as a 2 year-old, Shrewd Rhythm was transferred to the David Hayes stable after winning the Listed Vain Stakes first up at 3. After several setbacks including a 9 month layoff due to back problems, Shrewd Rhythm found his way to the Mick Price stable.

The colours worn by Shrewd Rhythm (Navy, White Sash, Yellow Sleeves and Cap) are those of Lindsay Park Stud, who have recently changed their branding to distinguish themselves from Lindsay Park Racing. This was the stud’s first runner in their new colours.

First for Face

First season sire Face Value produced his first stakes winner on Saturday when Silent Surround saluted at Morphettville in the Group 3 Sires' Produce Stakes over 1600m.

Trained by Bill Smart at Oakbank, Silent Surround made her second win at her fourth start her most important with a long head margin over Imacruiser (Akhadan - She's Posh by Bellotto).  Bint Maher (Al Maher - Queen's Choir by Palace Music) came in next another length-and-a-half further away.

Face Value has had 18 runners to the track for two winners and Silent Surround is his first group winner.

Purchased out of the draft of Lindsay Park (as agent) at the 2008 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale by Mark Minervini who gave $36,000 for the bay filly.

Silent Sourround is out of Rory's Jester mare Biography and was bred by Hong Kong based Dr. Faddy Hau.  Biography is a half-sister to Station Hand (by Rancher), being out of Ma Vie (by Sir Tristram), the winner of the Group 2 Carlyon Cup and runner-up in the Group I VRC Australian Cup.

Blue Diamond Winner to Stand at Lindsay Park Stud

The long and successful relationship between the Hayes family and Shadwell Stud entered a new chapter today with the announcement that Blue Diamond winner Reaan will be standing at Lindsay Park Stud from this upcoming season.

The Group One winning son of Hussonet is the latest addition to an impressive list of Shadwell colts to go to stud in Australasia. At Talaq, Fraar and Jeune all made their way to Lindsay Park Stud at the end of their illustrious racing careers.

Other graduates of the Hayes stable to have worn the famous blue and white Shadwell colours include Zabeel, Istidaad, Almaarad, Ihtiram, Tawqeet and Nadeem. Few other trainer / owner partnerships have had such an impact on the stallion ranks in Australasia.

Purchased at the Sydney Easter Yearling Sale for $375,000 Reaan won three of his first four starts as a two-year-old, running second in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate and winning the Blue Diamond Preview.

In winning the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes, Victoria’s most prestigious feature for juveniles, Reaan joined the likes of Redoute’s Choice, Bel Esprit, Nadeem and Zeditave.

In the spring of 2008 Reaan was admitted to the Werribee Vet Clinic with severe pneumonia. The prognosis was cautious at best with ultrasounds revealing large portions of his right lung were severely compromised. Fortunately, Reaan survived and consequently had one more start as a 3YO this autumn before being retired for stud duties.

Lindsay Park Stud boss Sam Hayes is looking forward to showing off Reaan to breeders throughout Australia.

“He is a stunning individual. To be standing a Blue Diamond winner really is a dream come true for our team,” Hayes said.

“We are very proud of our association with Shadwell Stud and are most grateful that H.H. Sheikh Hamdan and his team have elected to extend that relationship through to a third generation of our family business,” Hayes explained.

Reaan will be available for inspection in Melbourne (Flemington) from May 16 to 21 and will also be showcased at Lindsay Park Stud’s Open Day on June 14 (invitation only).

Reaan will stand for $16,500 inc. GST at Lindsay Park Stud in 2009 (full roster and fees below). As is Shadwell’s policy, his book will be limited to 85 mares.

Hissing Sid on track for hometown Cup

Lindsay Park Stud sale graduate Hissing Sid (Golden Snake - Domitrix by At Talaq) toyed with his opposition on ANZAC Day to win over 2000m at Flemington.

Purchased by William Huntingdon at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale in 2006 for Bill and Simon Wilde, Hissing Sid took his record to 12 starts for 5 wins and 4 placings.   Bred by Vic and Marie Smith, Hissing Sid continues a long term relationship between Lindsay Park and the Wildes. Another consistent performer for Wilde racing, Group Performer Youthful High (Jeune - Miasma), was bred at Lindsay Park by Colin Hayes' son-in-law Arthur Dabernig.

The Wildes will now take Hissing Sid and Youthful High to their home track for the Warnambool Cup on May 7.

Sires Produce bound Silent Surround continues run of seconds for Face Value

Last Saturday's program at Morphettville saw Face Value represented in the first 2 races, with his progeny filling 2nd placing in both events.

The ever consistent Wanaka Gold (Face Value ex Evening Gold by Gold Ace) was runner-up for the third time, when finishing behind Lee Freedman's promising Gibraltar Moon after being caught 3 and 4 wide the trip.

Silent Surround (Face Value ex Biography by Rory's Jester) started favourite in the 1500m lead up to next weekend's SAJC Sires Produce. After over racing early when sent to the lead, she fought on bravely to run second behind the David Hayes trained Poison Ivy. Silent Surround will push on to the Sires Produce where she looks hard to beat.

Silent Surround wins for Face Value

First season sire Face Value produced his 2nd winner on Saturday when Silent Surround saluted at Morphettville over 1200m.

Trained by Bill Smart at Oakbank, Silent Surround came from midfield and hit the line hard in a driving finish to dead-heat with the Leon MacDonald trained Testa Filou. That was just her second start and there looks to be a lot of improvement left in the filly, who was an unlucky 4th on debut behind the promising Miss Bellezza.

Silent Sourround is out of Rory's Jester mare Biography and was bred by Hong Kong based Dr. Faddy Hau. She realised $36,000 at the 2008 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale.

Face Value has now had 15 runners for 2 winners and 7 further place getters.

Barely a Moment makes a good impression at Melbourne Premier

Lindsay Park Stud's Melbourne Premier draft was right in the thick of the action early on Day One, represented with 2 fillies by Barely a Moment in the first 16 lots.

Lot 8, a filly out of Red Ransom mare Ransom Claim was knocked down to Patinack Farm for $100,000. She was one of only 6 fillies to make a six figure sum on Day 1.

Ransom Claim herself was a city winning mare who ran 4th in the G3 Vanity. Her dam is the Golden Slipper placegetter and 3 times stakes winner, Loving Cup.

Lot 16, a filly out of stakeswinner Reigning Belle was sold for $55,000 with Patinack Farm again the purchaser. She will go to the stables of leading Caulfield trainer Mick Price.

This continues the good run for Barely a Moment's first crop of yearlings, which also recently averaged $39,000 at the Perth Magic Millions Sale.

Nicconi on target for Guineas

Raised at Lindsay Park Stud, Nicconi had all the hallmarks from an early age of being another successful performer for his dam Nicola Lass, a producer of 4 stakes performers including triple G1 winner Niconero.

Being a 3/4 realtion to Niconero was about the only thing these two horses had in common from an ealry age. Whilst Niconero was a plain, backward foal, Nicconi was a more forward type which at the time was a pleasing sign for owners Les Gordon, Peter Devitt and David Hayes.

Now 3 years on, and Nicconi is heading towards the G1 Cadbury Guineas at Flemington on March 7 after winning 3 of his 4 starts to date. Nicconi is currently $4.80 second favourite for the 1600m event that promises to be one of the highlight races of the Melbourne Autumn.

Nicola Lass, who has done a marvellous job at stud, has received an upgarde in stallions over the past few seasons. She currently has a lovely yearling filly by Stratum agisting at Lindsay Park Stud that will be retained to race by her owners. She also has a Redoute's Choice foal at foot and was covered by Hussonet in season 2008.

Time Matters claims second stakes win

Monday's Listed John Dillon Stakes at Caulfield saw in form galloper Time Matters (Gilded Time - Maat by Sarab) score a comprehensive 2 length victory.

That was the second stakes win for the Darren Weir trained 6yo gelding, having previously won the SAJC Classic Mile in 2007 before an injury enforced layoff saw him off the racetrack for 21 months.

His sire Gilded Time has done a great job at stud in both hemisphere, having produced 52 stakes winners to date. Gilded Time stood in Australia for 4 seasons (1999-2002) and his progeny include triple G1 winner Barely a Moment and G2 winner Media, who was also placed at G1 level on 3 occasions.

Time Matters' half sister, Maatadau is currently in foal to Good Journey.

Looks promising

Fraar gelding Just Look is being touted as a horse with a bright future after his impressive win in the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

Trained by Lyn Tolsdon at Mornington, Just Look took his winning tally to 5 from just 12 starts after coming from near the tail of the field to run away winning convincingly by 1.75 lengths.

Just Look became his Fraar's 7th stakeswinner and 206th winner overall. Fraar, who is in semi-retirement stage at Lindsay Park Stud, has just completed his 15th season and is still in great condition. He covered 13 mares in 2008, all of which are now in foal.

Fun Spice continues the roll for Real Jester

Real Jester has enjoyed a good start to the season, particularly in Western Australia. On the back of Lead Rope, who made it 3 wins from 4 starts last week, Fun Spice (Real Jester ex Spice by Old Spice) remains unbeaten in 3 starts after winning at Ascot over 1500m last Saturday. The 3yo gelding is progressing through the grades quickly and looks to be a horse with a future.

Real Jester covered an average of 31 mares per season in his time at Rangeview Stud in Western Australia. He has 4 stakes performers to his credit and a winners to runners ratio over 50%. In less than 12 months he will have his first crop of more than 70 Lindsay Park bred 2yo’s hitting the track.

Real Jester has proven that he can upgrade his broodmares. From small books of modest mares in WA, his statistics are quite encouraging. Just in the past month he has had 13 runners for 7 individual winners of 11 races.

Real Jester attracted a good quality book in his first season at Lindsay Park in 2006 and we are really looking forward to getting them through the sales ring and on to the track next year.

Another winner for Real Jester

Trainer John Bowtell looks like he has a smart 3 year-old on his hands going on the recent form of his filly Lead Rope (Real Jester - Gay Abandon by Jugah).

Racing at Ascot yesterday over 1200m, Lead Rope, who started a short priced favourite ($2.20), was again too good for her rivals, winning comfortably by a length. She has now won both her starts this time in, bringing her career tally to 3 wins from 4 starts.

Real Jester has had 12 runners this season for 5 winners of 8 races. His first Lindsay Park Stud crop are now yearlings.

Lead Rope wins for Real Jester

Promising 3yo filly Lead Rope returned from a spell to record a win in very slick time at Ascot last Wednesday.

The daughter of Real Jester and Jugah mare Gay Abandon, Lead Rope broke the 1:10 barrier for 1200m, recording 1:9:59. To put this into perspective, star galloper Marasco has raced over this track and distance 6 times, and has only broke 1:10 once (1:9:71). This included a G2 and Listed win on good tracks.

Lead Rope now has 2 wins from 3 sarts. Her only unplaced run was in the WA Sires earlier this year. She looks to be a filly with a bright future and we wish her trainer John Bowtell and owners, the Haddleton family, all the very best of luck with her.

First Face Value runners impress

With the first 2yo races of the season now underway, first season sire Face Value's runners are showing good signs.

Face The Ace (Face Value ex Uniforms by Strategic) went close to giving her sire his first win. The 2yo filly trained by David Hayes was an unlucky 4th on debut in the Fulham Park Plate, before narrowly being beaten at Morphettville last Saturday.

Stabelmate Flying Face (Face Value - Fly Me Home by Flying Spur) was on debut in the same race on Saturday, finishing a nice fourth after racing greenly. She is expected to improve a lot from the run and will be racing again at Murray Bridge on Oaks Day.

Face The Ace will be transferred to David Hayes' Flemington stables and will run there on Melbourne Cup Day.

Lightly raced Economy (Good Journey ex Country Class by Woodborough) appreciated the step up in distance at Moe on Monday to run away with an easy 4 length victory.

Having only her third start, the 3 year-old filly trained by Mick Price could not have been more impressive in breaking her maiden over 1628 metres.

Her victory was ran in significantly quicker time than the other 2 higher classed races over that distance on the day, indicating that there are plenty more wins in store for her.

Good Journey parade

Lindsay Park Stud’s Good Journey has attracted overwhelming attention from breeders this season and looks like covering a high quality book of mares. He has more than 150 bookings in 2008, which would see him break Barely a Moment’s South Australian record of 148 set last season.

Mares visiting Good Journey this season include Royal Purler (G1 winner), Umber (G3 winner), Grand Strategy (1/2 sister to G1 winner Grand Journey), Marsiliana (3/4 sister to Caulfielld Cup winner Arctic Scent), Elusive Doll (1/2 sister to G1 winner Hard To Get), Violet Haze (full sister to G1 winner Notoire) as well as daughters of Group One winners Ambala and Kissing Cousin.

Good Journey was paraded last Sunday September 7th to a group of local SA breeders who braved the wet conditions for a first look at one of the country’s most promising sires. Some photos from the day are included below.

Good Journey 3 year-old Miles Above continues to go from strength to strength winning today at Sandown over 1500m.

At his first start in the city, Miles Above (Good Journey ex Grand Prospect by Flying Spur) stumbled out of the barriers to settle last before rounding in his opposition to win running away by just over a length.

The Dennis Daffy trained galloper now has 2 wins from 3 starts and judging by his win today, he still has plenty of improvement left, after racing greenly for most of the trip.

A full brother to Group 1 winner Grand Journey, Miles Above looks set for a bright future.

Hissing Sid on trial for bigger things

Hissing Sid looks like a horse of the future in the staying ranks after making it 3 wins from 7 starts when impressively winning last Saturday's Slickpix Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Warrnambool trainer Bill Wilde, who prepares Hissing Sid, was enthused by the three-year-old gelding's performance and is looking forward to targeting him towards some bigger races next season "He won like a good stayer... (he is) just getting better and better" Wilde explained.

The son of Golden Snake was prepared and sold by Lindsay Park Stud at the 2006 Melbourne Premier Sale for $25,000.

Hissing Sid's dam Domitrix who only started twice is a grand daughter of Deck The Halls. Her sire At Talaq has been having a great run of late with the likes of Murtajill, Autumn Jeuney and Bel Mer all representing him well this seaosn as well as the likes of past G1 winners Mummify, Rewaaya and Above Deck.

Re-Structuring of Lindsay Park Stud

Over the last three years there has been a great deal of change at Lindsay Park Stud.

Under the guidance of David Hayes we have been able to expand our stallion roster, enhance our stud facilities and develop a team of dedicated staff.

We now approach the next three years with a solid foundation and a plan that we will see the stud capitalising on more opportunity.

As part of this plan David has kindly offered that I increase my stake holding in the stud business. As of July 2, I have purchased a majority share in Lindsay Park Stud.

David Hayes will retain 100% of David Hayes Holdings which includes the Racing Stable and the Angaston property upon which the Stud operates. Whilst remaining one of the Lindsay Park Studs biggest clients and a key investor in stallions David has relinquished his shareholding in the stud so as to focus even more of his attention on training winners.

As part of this progression we will be establishing a new Lindsay Park Stud Board with the first appointment being Mr Darren Thomas. Darren is the Managing Director of one of Australia’s fastest growing family owned businesses, T&R Pastoral, based at Murray Bridge in South Australia. Darren will also be taking an equity holding in Lindsay Park Stud.

I would like to formally welcome Darren as a partner in the Stud business and thank the past Board Members for their significant contribution to the growth of Lindsay Park Stud over the last three years.

Lindsay Park Stud is on the verge of another very exciting period of growth, thanks entirely to the loyal support of our clients and the passion of our team.

De Beers Syndicate makes its first purchases

The recent Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale saw the first purchases of the recently formed De Beers Syndicate.

De Beers, a Group One winner from the Eight Carat family will commence stud duties this season at Lindsay Park and his owners have been busy seeking suitable mares to support him with.

Some of the quality lots purchased by Bloodstock Agent Mark Pilkington on behalf of the De Beers Syndicate included Boardwalk Bell, a half sister to Champion 9-time Group One winner Northerly along with stakes winners North Boy and Northern Song. Holbrook Lass, the dam of G1 Caulfield Guineas winner, In Top Swing. Newenham, a half sister to G1 Caulfield Cup runner-up Douro Valley, and the stakes placed Hip Hop, the dam of smart sprinter Tramuntana, who placed in the G1 Oakleigh Plate.

Lindsay Park Stud Managing Director Sam Hayes is extremely pleased with the support De Beers has received since his announcement to stud. "These mares will give De Beers the start a Group One winner from the Eight Carat family deserves and it is reflective of the faith Peter Devitt, Les Gordon and David Hayes have in the horse."

De Beers was a two-year-old winner who dead-heated with Stratum in the G2 Roman Consul over 1200m. He ran Racing To Win within a neck in the G2 Hobartville over 1400m and defeated the likes of Primus and Darci Brahma in his G1 Rosehill Guineas victory.

De Beers will be standing at Lindsay Park Stud for $6,600 inc. GST.

Good Times Ahead for Lindsay Park and Magali Farms

Lindsay Park Stud and Magali Farms have entered a partnership that will see proven young sire Good Journey (Nureyev – Chimes of Freedom) shuttle between South Australia and the USA.

The Group One winning son of Nureyev will re-commence his Southern Hemisphere duties at Lindsay Park Stud in the upcoming 2008 stud season after having stood privately for four seasons at Ealing Park before being purchased by Magali Farms in California.

With his oldest progeny now 3YO’s Good Journey’s has produced 10 winners from only 13 runners in his first crop of 23 live foals. Included in his first crop are Group One winner Grand Journey (ex Grand Prospect) and Group Two winner Sound Journey (ex Written By Sound).

Sound Journey won the G2 Alistair Clark Stakes (1600m) after having won his first three starts and running fourth in the G3 VRC CS Hayes Stakes. He subsequently ran fourth in the Group One VRC Guineas. Grand Journey is currently third favorite for the AJC Oaks after having collected the G2 WA Oaks and G1 WA Derby double.

Bred along the same lines as Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice (they share Best In Show as their fourth dam) Good Journey hails from one of the most celebrated families in the international stud book. He is by champion sire of sires Nureyev out of multiple Gr. One winner Chimes of Freedom (by Private Account).

His second dam Aviance is also a Gr. One winner and dam of four time Gr. One winner Denon as well as the dam of Spinning World. Good Journey’s half brother is Champion USA Sprinter, triple Gr. One winner and sire Aldebaran (by Mr Prospector).

As a racehorse Good Journey was as classy as he was consistent being placed 15 times in 16 starts (7 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds). His wins included the Gr. One Woodbine Mile along with three other wins at Group Two level. He ran third behind Domedriver and Rock of Gibraltar in the Group One Breeders Cup Mile and was placed at Group level over a mile on another two occasions. He competed exclusively on turf.

After having been purchased by Magali Farms in 2006 Good Journey covered 80 mares in California in 2007 and is in the process of covering another 75 mares this season.

In the deal brokered by Adelaide Bloodstock Agent Adrian Hancock, Lindsay Park Stud has purchased 50% of Good Journey with Magali Farms and partners retaining 50%.

“Our partnership will see Good Journey shuttle between our farms for as long as he is fit and fertile and we look forward to providing him with every opportunity to build upon this most impressive start to his stud career,” explained Magali Farms Proprietor Richard Sulpizio.

Lindsay Park Stud boss Sam Hayes was delighted to have secured Good Journey in partnership with the team at Magali Farms.

“In developing a roster of commercial stallions we could not have hoped for a better credentialed addition than Good Journey and to be doing so in partnership with Magali Farms is an added bonus.

“I would encourage breeders to take a look at his pedigree and race record and seriously consider the potential of a stallion that has produced a Group One winner and a Group Two winner from only 13 runners in his first crop,” Sam Hayes explained.

Good Journey will stand for $18,000 inc. GST at Lindsay Park Stud in 2008.

March 27th 2008
Lindsay Park Stud has today announced the addition of Group One winner De Beers (Quest For Fame – Chimeara by Danehill) to their growing stallion roster.

De Beers, a $750,000 yearling, showed his potential as a two-year-old under the guidance of John Hawkes when impressively winning at his second start on Doncaster Day at Randwick over 1200m.

Resuming as a three-year-old, De Beers was asked to validate his price tag when thrown in the deep. He wouldn’t disappoint either, dead-heating for second with Golden Slipper winner Stratum in the Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m). He would then return in the autumn for new trainer David Hayes, after a deal was struck to purchase the promising colt.

At his first start for Hayes, De Beers finished a closing second (beaten a neck) to four-time Group 1 winner Racing To Win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill over 1400m. Racing To Win would then go on that preparation to claim the George Ryder – Doncaster double and be crowned the champion three-year-old of the 2005/06 season.

Being a more precocious type than many of his well known relatives, there was always a query on whether De Beers would be able to handle the step up in distance to the 2000m of the Rosehill Guineas. These fears were soon put to rest as he raced clear of his rivals to claim his Group One victory. A fortnight later he was runner-up behind Headturner in the AJC Derby (2400m) in what was a gallant effort considering he was used up early in the race from a wide barrier.

De Beers returned at four where he failed to run up to his ability, which was attributed to a number of minor setbacks and he was duly retired from racing.

De Beers is by Quest For Fame, the English Derby winner and sire of 40 stakes winners including Viscount and the ill-fated Group One winner Unworldly, who like De Beers was also out of a Danehill mare.

His female line is one of the most well known and celebrated in the studbook. His dam Chimeara is a stakes placed daughter by Danehill from the wonderful mare Tristalove, a multiple Group 1 winner of 11 races including the AJC Sires Produce and Australasian Oaks. Tristalove, who hails from the dominant Eight Carat family, is the dam of 4 stakes winners including Chimeara’s full brothers Viking Ruler and Kempinsky.

Lindsay Park Stud’s Managing Director Sam Hayes is delighted to have secured a horse of De Beers’ quality for stud duties.

"David Hayes’ upbeat opinion of De Beers as a racehorse and stallion prospect made him a natural addition to our roster.

We’ve managed to secure De Beers at a level that allows us to stand him at such a competitive fee.

It is tempting to get carried away with stallion prices in the current market but the ultimate burden falls on breeders whom have to pay inflated service fees.

Our model revolves around buying well, not selling well,” Sam explains.

De Beers will stand his first season for $6,600 inc. GST. Alongside him at Lindsay Park Stud in 2008 will be Barely a Moment, Face Value, Real Jester and Alannan.

Face Value’s first crop of yearlings provided some of the highlights of this weeks Adelaide Magic Millions Sale.

The 2003 Caulfield Guineas runner-up had 16 lots catalogued in sessions 1 & 2 of the sale. He averaged $38,333 with a median price of $30,000, comparing favourably to the sale average of $26,290.

The top price lot for Day 2 was a filly out of Extravagantly, a grand-daughter of the triple Group 1 winner Special. Consigned by Lindsay Park Stud (as agent) she was knocked down to South Australian based breeder Darren Thomas for $120,000.

Following on from the successful pin-hook of the Face Value – More Than Fair colt at this year’s Karaka sales (purchased as a weanling at the Great Southern Sale for $26,000 and sold on for $75,000) was the sale of lot 215, a colt by Face Value out of the city winning Jeune mare, Jeune’s Heart. Originally a $20,000 purchase from Lindsay Park Stud’s 2007 Great Southern Sale draft, he was purchased by Steve & Kerry Jostlear’s Ampulla Lodge and sold under their banner for $48,000 to Avo Damirdjian.

The son of Red Ransom also had the second top price lot in the third session, a colt from the city winning Grand Lodge mare Bites. Again, this colt was sold as a weanling for just $4,250. Offered by Kiah Glenn Stud, he was purchased by Aquanita Racing for $26,000.

Face Value, a precocious horse himself from a very fast family should be able to produce early runners if his first crop progeny are anything to go by. Trainer of the last three Blue Diamond winners David Hayes comments “From the yearlings I have seen, he is producing big, strong, athletic types who will be able to cope with early training”.

Face Value covered 108 mares at $6,600 inc. GST in 2007.

February 21st 2008

Lindsay Park’s Alannan (Conquistador Cielo – Dame Sybil) has enjoyed a good start to the New Year with six individual winners and a stakes place getter in the past six weeks, indicating that his progeny are now starting to come into their own as three-year-olds.

Little Alle (Alannan – Pep Talk) will line up in this weekend’s $150k Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) after her recent stakes placing in the Listed Strutt Stakes. The Karina O’Sullivan trained filly was sent to Tasmania on the back of an impressive Morphettville win and Sandown placing. She will be joined in the Oaks field by recent Hobart winner Alreggae (Alannan – Calypso Breeze).

The David Hayes trained Capetown Lad (Alannan – Moonlight Lady) also appreciated the step up in distance from 1200m to 1522m when he comfortably accounted for a smart field at Morphettville last month. He has since been sent to the paddock with a view to race him in the early part of the spring.

Another three-year-old from the Hayes yard showing promise is Her Alibi (Alannan-Giftenary). After being desperately unlucky on debut in town, she was taken to Strathalbyn on February 6, strolling home by 4 _ lengths in smart time.

Last year’s Adelaide Magic Millions runner-up Swirly Dream (Alannan – Jon’s Pleasure) is back in work and is a possible starter in the $100k maiden race on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast on March 24.

Alannan, who was recently awarded South Australia’s leading two-year-old sire and leading first season sire, has 10 yearlings entered in the Adelaide Magic Millions sale commencing Monday March 10.

The colt, by the 2003 Caulfield Guineas runner-up, was previously sold by Lindsay Park Stud as a weanling at the 2007 William Inglis Great Southern Sale for $26,000.

A larger selection from Face Value’s first crop of yearlings will be on offer in March at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale where he has 27 catalogued, including 5 from Lindsay Park Stud’s draft.

Face Value, who defeated horses such as Elvstroem, Exceed and Excel (twice) and Starcraft throughout his career, covered 108 mares in 2007. He stands for $6,600 GST Inc.

Lindsay Park Stallion Alannan off to a ‘Dream’ Start

An eager crowd of South Australians and interstate visitors made their way to Alan Scott Park last Wednesday to witness the running of the $401,000 Magic Millions 2 Year Old Classic.

Leading trainer David Hayes was well represented with 5 runners in the race and it was his heavily backed first starter Swirly Dream (Alannan – Jon’s Pleasure) who turned in an eye catching effort to finish a brave second.

Swirly Dream, a $22,000 purchase at the 2006 Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale didn’t enjoy the best of luck in a race that endured much interference. After jumping well she was caught three wide, covering extra ground throughout the race.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn was able to get her balanced in the straight and she made up a lot of ground to beat home all bar the Phillip Stokes trained Truly Beautiful.

“She is a classy filly, it was her first start today and she did not turn a hair,” Dunn said.

Swirly Dream, a half sister to Group One winner Padstow, is from the first crop of Lindsay Park based stallion Alannan. The Adelaide Magic Millions sales graduate will now be aimed at the Listed Walter Brown Stakes at Cheltenham Park on March 24.

Alannan is enjoying a great start to his stud career. Prior to Swirly Dream’s debut, Hayes had taken 2 Alannan’s to the track for victory on both occasions. The first was with Aquifer at Victoria Park back in October and then with Fitofancy who defeated a smart bunch of 2 year olds also at Victoria Park on December 15 last year.

On back of these results there has been plenty of demand for Alannan’s progeny at the recent Adelaide Magic Millions Sale with them selling up to $43,000.

Alannan will stand at Lindsay Park Stud in 2007 for a service fee of $8,250 (GST Inc.) alongside triple Group 1 winner Barely a Moment as well as Face Value, Real Jester and Fraar.
