Hailing from the distinguished Eight Carat family, De Beers established his mark as a two-year old, winning at his second start on Doncaster Day at Randwick. His potential was confirmed in the spring when, returning as a three-year-old, he dead-heated for second with Golden Slipper winner Stratum in the Group Two 1200m Roman Consul Stakes.
The following autumn, he took the challenge to four time Group One winner, Racing to Win in the Group Two Hobartville Stakes (1400m), closing late to be edged out narrowly by a neck. Showing more speed than some of his classically performed relatives, there was some concern about De Beers stepping up in journey to 2000m in the Rosehill Guineas. The sceptics were soon silenced, when he raced clear to claim his first Group One victory. A fortnight later his capabilities were again showcased when he ran a gallant second behind Headturner in the AJC Derby.
A descendent from one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most dominant families, De Beers’ dam is the stakes placed Danehill mare Chimeara – a daughter to multiple Group One winner and producer, Tristalove – and his sire, Quest For Fame, has produced no less than 40 stakes winners including Viscount, Unworldly and Dracula. De Beers carries all the winning hallmarks of his family as he embarks on his first season at Lindsay Park Stud.
